The Currency toolbar button ( $ ) in Excel 2003 and 2007 will not display a number the same way as the Currency category in the Format Cells dialog box.
Currency: The Format Style
The Currency toolbar button formats a number using the Currency Style, which is similar to the Accounting category format. A column of cells formatted with the Currency button puts the dollar symbol ( $ ) on the left side of a cell regardless of the column width and the number of digits in a cell. As an example, the numbers 1 and 1000 in separate cells above each other, and formatted with the Currency button, will display the dollar sign on the left side of each cell, not next to the lead number in each cell.
Currency: the Format Category
Cells that have been formatted under the Currency category, will display the dollar symbol right next to the leading number, no matter how long the number is or how wide the column is.
Make sure you pay attention to this difference, as the convenience of the Currency button may produce unwanted results when the column is altered at a later date.
